South Dakota Lawmakers Kill Proposal to Study Age Verification

PIERRE, S.D.—The state legislature of South Dakota has killed a replacement proposal for an age verification measure that would have compelled the executive board of the body's Legislative Research Council to study the potential impacts of such a law. KELO reports that House Bill 1257 failed to be adopted and reach concurrence between the Senate and House of Representatives. This means that both chambers failed to agree on adopting the proposal to study age verification laws. Originally, House Bill 1257 would've implemented so-called "reasonable" age verification requirements on adult websites. State Rep. Bethany Soye, a far-right Republican, is the bill's prime sponsor. However, the Senate Judiciary Committee deferred it to the 41st day of the legislative session, and there are only 40 legislative days.
