AEBN Study Finds The Popularity Of Taboo Has Skyrocketed

CHARLOTTE, N.C.—With two decades of sales data at their disposal, AEBN (Adult Entertainment Broadcast Network) is in a position to track the rise and fall of adult categories with unique insight, and now the company has published a revealing look at one of the most popular and controversial categories of porn: Taboo. Taking a closer look at taboo content on both straight and gay sides of the adult Video-On-Demand (VOD) market, AEBN aims to uncover the mystery behind porn’s forbidden fruit. Typically referring to the societally forbidden sex acts between step-relations or religious authorities and their subordinates, taboo porn is erotic role-playing between consenting adults. Although the audience (except for some religiously conservative zealots) knows it’s a fantasy, the idea of breaking major societal rules serves to draw in some consumers and keep their interest. Taboo content has garnered a great deal of attention in both the adult industry and mainstream media. From Ted Cruz’s twitter account “liking” a very taboo tweet to the HBO juggernaut Game of Thrones featuring main characters in incestuous relationships, focus on scandalous and "inappropriate" relationships has exploded in recent years.  Consumer interest in the previously obscure taboo category followed suit. With greater interest came bigger budgets, more popular stars, and more exposure to the billions of porn consumers worldwide. How did a fringe fetish have such an unprecedented surge in global popularity? Why are consumers so drawn to this type of storytelling? Will future trends in mainstream media lead new and exciting categories in adult to steal the top spot in VOD? The article examines the driving forces behind the rapid growth of this kinky category and looks at key points in the history of taboo content.
