‘Brexhibition’ Of UK Politicians As Porn Collages Goes Up Sunday

Almost four years after the historic “Brexit” election, in which United Kingdom citizens in a national referendum voted narrowly to pull their country out of the European Union, the time has finally come. At 11 p.m. Greenwich Mean Time tonight, the U.K. will depart the EU, making Brexit a reality.  Just two days later, a London art gallery will commemorate—or perhaps satirize—Brexit with a new, one-day-only exhibition of porn-based art.  Specifically, the Hoxton 253 Art Project Space will open (and close) the “Brexhibition,” that features images from porn magazines creatively pasted together into collages depicting some of the leading British politicians involved in pulling the U.K. out of Europe. "We now know that Brexit is definitely happening and we do not want to rehash whether that was the right or wrong decision, but instead find ways that we can move forward as a society and create positive next steps, whether that's through art or otherwise," said Jeyda Heselton, the pop-up exhibit’s organizer said.  Heselton added that she spent "a lot of time cutting out porn over the last few weeks." "To me, using disarming imagery is a bit of a statement," Heselton added. "It elicits this raw emotion and that's similar to what Brexit does. It makes people frustrated and angry.” The 27-year-old, who owns a bicycle repair shop, said that she hopes the porn collages depicting politicians such as former Prime Ministers David Cameron  and Theresa May will help “open up a conversation” about the direction of the country post-Brexit. "We forget that something light-hearted can actually help us to heal and move on. Laughing and taking that anger out on something is actually the best way of dealing with it, in my opinion,” she said. As for her own position on Brexit, Heselton says that she voted to “remain”—in other words, against leaving the EU. “But I don't want to go over that ground anymore.” “Brexhibition” runs from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. GMT at Hoxton 253 Art Project Space on Sunday, February 2.  Photo By Christoph Scholz / Wikimedia Commons
