Since the fires started in Australia, at least 24 people have been killed, and more than 500 million animals have lost their lives, including koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, birds and other iconic wildlife. The fires have burned more than 8.4 million hectares, and thousands of homes and other structures have been destroyed.
