New Chinese App Needs Just 8 Seconds To Make Stunning Deepfakes

Last week, AVN.com reported that leading digital video authentication expert Shamir Allibhai made an alarming prediction: “Deepfake” videos, in which any person’s face can be made to appear realistically imposed into any existing video (including of course, porn), would soon be as easy to use as an Instagram filter. Allibhai predicted that the rapid pace of development in the artificial intelligence field would make deepfake technology available to anyone with a smartphone within a few years. Now, it appears that Allibhai’s prediction has proven correct—except in one regard. The extreme ease of creating deepfakes that he described has now become a reality not within a few years, but within a few days of his prediction. AVN.com first reported on the existence of new deepfake technology in December of 2017, when an anonymous Reddit user posted several short clips in which popular Hollywood actresses appeared to perform explicit sexual acts in hardcore porn clips. But at the time, each deepfake video, though only a few seconds in length, took the creator hours to produce, due to the amount of computing power required to crunch the digital video data. But thanks to Zao, a new app that can be downloaded so far only on the Chinese Apple app store, according to Bloomberg News, creating an alarmingly realistic deepfake video can be accomplished in about eight seconds, at least according to one Zao user who, using a single image of his own face, inserted himself seamlessly into a series of scenes from Hollywood movies starring Leonardo DiCaprio, as seen in the video below. According to Bloomberg, Zao users can “take the lead” in “hundreds” of movies. “It’s a chance to be the star and swap places with the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Leonardo DiCaprio or Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory in a matter of moments,” the Bloomberg report stated. The app was released in the China app store on Friday, and before the weekend was out, had gone massively viral, shooting to the top of the Chinese download charts, according to the online analytics site App Annie.   So far, there have been no reports of users creating deepfake porn using Zao, but that application will likely not be far behind. The Zao app is available only to users with a Chinese phone number at this time, according to The Washington Post.  “Some of the more sinister uses [of deepfake AI] have included revenge videos with women’s heads pasted into porn videos,” The Post reported. “And many researchers in the field are concerned about potential uses of this type of technology as the United States approaches the 2020 elections.” Photo By YouTube Screen Capture
