Stormy Daniels Can’t Delay Cohen Showdown After Switching Lawyers

Stormy Daniels fired her flamboyant and controversial lawyer Michael Avenatti in March, after the year-long lawsuit she filed against Donald Trump and Trump’s then-lawyer and “fixer” Michael Cohen was dismissed. But Daniels still has another lawsuit against Cohen in the court system, and she says her new lawyer needs more time to fully familiarize himself with the litigation before Daniels and Cohen have a showdown in court later this month. But on Tuesday, a judge in California disagreed. A hearing is set for May 22 on Cohen’s demand to be dropped from the lawsuit, which accuses him of colluding with another pervious Daniels attorney, Keith Davidson, to keep her quiet about her sexual encounter with Trump, which conversation took place in 2006. The judge ruled that the hearing date will not be changed.  He did give Daniels’ latest lawyer—Tulsa, Oklahoma litigator Clark Brewster—an extra week to submit his written arguments to the court, however. Cohen himself will likely not appear at the May 22 hearing, due to the fact that on Monday, he reported to a federal prison in upstate New York to begin serving a three-year sentence—in part for a campaign finance violation in connection with a $130,000 “hush money” payment to Daniels to keep her quiet over the tryst with Trump. Avenatti has also run into serious legal problems of his own since the split with Daniels. Last month he was indicted on 36 counts of embezzlement, wire fraud, tax evasion, bankruptcy fraud and bank fraud related to what prosecutors say was his repeated pattern of cheating clients out of millions in settlement money, and using the cash to finance a lavish lifestyle that included part-ownership of a private jet, allegedly purchased with money embezzled from a client. Though none of the charges or allegations against Avenatti filed by prosecutors involve his representation of Daniels, the AVN Hall of Famer said that she was “saddened but not shocked” when she heard about the charges against Avenatti.   She went on to say in a statement on March 25 that she decided to "terminate" Avenatti's services “after discovering that he had dealt with me extremely dishonestly.” But though Daniels promised “more announcements to come,” she has not yet made any further “announcements” relating to Avenatti, nor specified any allegations of “dishonest” dealings in his legal relationship with her.
