U.K. Porn ‘Age Verification’ System Reportedly Passes First Test

CYBERSPACE—The United Kingdom’s upcoming age-verification law, blocking all online porn sites to users who can’t or won’t upload official documents proving they are at least 18 years of age, has been delayed repeatedly since the law was passed in 2017, as AVN.com has reported.  But on Wednesday of this week, the age verification technology projected to be used when the law takes effect underwent its first national test. According to a report in Britain’s Mirror newspaper, the system passed the porn-blocking test with flying colors. The single video that was the subject of the test was produced by five mothers of teenage kids who, as part of a British reality TV show, set out to make a porn film that they believed would be suitable for viewing by their own kids. On the show Mums Make Porn, as AVN.com reported, the five “mums” worked with independent porn producer Erika Lust to make a film titled, "I Want Fourplay.” But the fact that no one without proof of being over 18 could watch the video seemed to contradict the show’s intention of creating a porn film that their teen kids could watch. The final episode of Mums Make Porn aired on Britain’s Channel 4 on Wednesday, and the "I Want Fourplay” video went online immediately after the episode aired. But to watch the film, internet users were required to use the software AgeChecked to prove their age—uploading a driver’s license, passport or other official identity document. The AgeChecked system “never stores personal information on its users and credentials are anonymized, so personal data cannot be passed on to the adult web site in question—or indeed anyone,” according to a report by Open Access Government. Nonetheless, opponents of the as-yet-unimplemented age-verification law say that serious privacy concerns remain with the system, and how it will use the uploaded data, according to The Guardian newspaper.  Photo via Wikimedia Commons
