Japan’s Porn Stars Offer Help With Proper Garbage Disposal

JAPAN—Visitors to Japan often come away with the impression that the country, even in big cities such as Tokyo or Osaka, is one of the cleanest places on Earth. And that impression is not wrong. The sight of litter on the ground, or any sort of stray trash at all, is a rare one in any Japanese city or town. But that doesn’t mean Japan doesn’t have a trash problem. In fact, Japan’s problems can be severe—with each of its 126 million people generating, on average, about 785 pounds of garbage per year in a country with approximately the same land mass as California, meaning that very little space is available for landfills. Fortunately, Japan has a complex but efficient system of trash disposal, but one that requires the participation of the citizenry. And now Japanese people, at least Tokyo-dwellers, are getting some help with their trash disposal practices—from the country’s porn performers. According to Britain’s Sun newspaper the Japanese adult video producer Soft on Demand has provided one of Tokyo’s busiest districts, Shibuya—an area dominated by youth and nightlife—with a new set of public trash receptacles that when used, trigger recorded messages from Japan’s top porn (or “AV” at the Japanese call the industry) performers. "In Japan, the waste problem in Shibuya is known as a big problem. So we created the trash box which plays sexy voice of porn actresses when people put trash in it,” the creators of the “Sexy Bins” said in a statement. The purpose, according to Soft on Demand: “to improve the environment, utilizing the power of porn videos.” When a passing pedestrian tosses refuse in one of the bins, a video of a performer plays, delivering a message such as, "I will give up a lot if you put in,” or “do you put it in properly?" Or in some cases, the message is simply, “more, more!” The bins are triggered by sensors that can also detect the amount of the waste tossed into the trash can, with different quantities of garbage triggering different messages—messages that the creators hope will add an “erotic” element to waste disposal, without being “offensive.” Photo By [email protected] / Wikimedia Commons
