1 in 5 U.K. Parents Say Porn Sites Should Have No Age Restriction

In 2017, the United Kingdom Parliament passed a law requiring a national age-verification system for online porn sites, and after numerous delays, the law is now scheduled to take effect in April of this year, almost two years later. But a new survey of U.K. parents, while showing broad support for the law, perhaps surprisingly also reveals that one in five British parents do not believe that their young children should be banned, at least by a law, from accessing porn online. According to the survey by the group Internet Matters, while 83 percent of parents favor an age restriction system for adult sites, 17 percent do not. “Out of those who oppose the government scheme, 30 percent said it is because they would not trust age-verification companies with their data,” explained a report by Yahoo! UK. “A further 18 percent said they thought children would be able to get around the age-verification system, and 13 percent said they did not think it would prevent children from watching porn.” An earlier survey conducted by Middlesex University, as reported by the BBC, showed that 53 percent of U.K. kids between the ages of 11 and 16 years old reported viewing online porn. And for teens between the ages of 14 and 16, porn has become a nearly universal phenomenon, with 94 percent of that group saying that they have accessed porn sites. Privacy advocates have led the fight against the new age verification law, as AVN.com has reported. The law would require internet users to purchase a “digital passport” that would unlock porn sites, which would otherwise be blocked under the new law. But the possibility that the data used to obtain those “passports” could be used to monitor users' online behavior. "Without specific privacy controls embedded in the legislation, there is a very real risk of U.K. adults' porn habits being outed,” privacy advocate Pandora Blake explained. “The government's ill-conceived age verification régime puts up to 25 million U.K. adults at risk.” Photo By WillVision/Wikimedia Commons
