‘Weed Porn’ Searches Spiked Dramatically as Canada Legalized Pot

Last Wednesday, Canada became the world’s largest legal marijuana market when the country’s new law legalizing sale and possession of limited amounts of cannabis took effect, as AVN.com reported. But apparently, simply smoking the herb was not enough for many Canadians, who went online to explore other uses for pot. According to statistics released Wednesday by the porn mega-site PornHub, Canadians searches for adult videos in which the performers get baked while having sex shot upward by more than 200 percent—in other words, “weed porn” searches originating in Canada more than tripled on October 17. Pornhub researched its cannabis-related porn searches at the request of the online men’s lifestyle site Mel Magazine, which summed up the findings, writing that Canadians “hosted wake-and-bake parties, passed joints while waiting in line for the 111 weed stores that debuted later that day, rolled blunts and cleared bongs and otherwise rejoiced in this historic public policy milestone. Then they went home and fapped to porn featuring other people getting high.” According to Pornhub Insights, the top searched weed-related term searched by Canadians on October 17 was, perhaps not surprisingly, “weed,” followed by “smoking weed.” But some more exotic pot-related porn searches also  registered on the Pornhub Insights chart, including “weed sex,” “smoking weed masturbate,” “marijuana masturbation” and “girls smoking weed naked.” Broken down by region, according to a report on the stats by VICE, the most searches were in Newfoundland, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia—all regions on the northeast Atlantic coast of Canada. Nova Scotia, in particular, has the highest rate of per capita pot use in the country, according to a report by Global News, so perhaps the high rate of weed porn searches emanating from the Atlantic Canada region is not surprising. “When compared to the rest of the world, Canadians are 224 percent more likely to search for cannabis-related terms,” according to Pornhub Insights. That places Canada fourth in the world in volume of pot-porn searches, just behind Kenya, Switzerland and South Africa, but ahead of the United States. Young Canadians are especially fascinated by using cannabis during sexual acts. Canadian 18- to 34-year-olds were 68 percent more likely to search for weed porn than their fellow Canadians who are 35 and over. As recently as 2016, Israel—with a population of fewer than nine million—ranked third-highest worldwide in frequency of weed-porn searches.
