Marilyn Monroe: Lost Nude Scene With Clark Gable Reportedly Found

A “lost” scene from Marilyn Monroe’s final film, in which the iconic star strips nude in front of another Hollywood legend, Clark Gable, has reportedly been discovered locked in a vault where it had been kept by the son of the film’s producer for the past 57 years, since the footage was believed to have been left on the proverbial cutting room floor and discarded, according to a report by The Daily Mail newspaper.  Had the scene been included in the 1961 film The Misfits, it would likely have been the first nude scene in a Hollywood studio production since the imposition of the “Motion Picture Code” censorship rules first adopted in 1930. The Code banned even silhouettes of nude figures, and also prohibited shots in which characters were seen undressing, even if no nudity was included.  The nude scene, according to a report by People Magazine, was improvised by Monroe and not included in the screenplay penned by her then-husband, playwright Arthur Miller. But the movie’s director, John Huston—another Hollywood icon best known for directing such classics as The Maltese Falcon and The Man Who Would Be King—was unimpressed with Monroe’s spontaneous display of her physique for the camera, telling her, “Honey, I’ve seen them before,” and nixing the scene as extraneous to the narrative of The Misfits, even though Gable argued that the nude scene should remain in the movie. The Daily Mail obtained a still image from the scene, depicting a nude Monroe from the back, holding a sheet between herself and Gable. That image may be viewed at this link. The footage was reportedly uncovered by Monroe biographer Charles Casillo, author of the upcoming Marilyn Monroe: The Private Life of a Public Icon. Casillo said that when he interviewed the son of Misfits producer Frank Taylor, Curtice Taylor, he was surprised to find that the younger Taylor kept the "lost" footage in a locked cabinet, where it had remained since his father died in 1999. While unused footage in Hollywood was generally thrown away, Taylor said, his father saved the unused Monroe nude scene because he believed it to be “important and groundbreaking.” The Misfits was a haunted production in many ways, being the final film for both Monroe and Gable, who had been a major Hollywood star at least since the 1934 hit It Happened One Night. Gable died at age 59 of a heart attack soon after The Misfits shoot wrapped in late 1961. Monroe died at age 36 the following year, on August 5, 1962, of a barbiturate overdose. Another of the film’s stars, Montgomery Clift (seen behind Monroe in the photo at the top of this page), died at age 45 of acute heart disease in 1966, after making just three more films.  Photo of Marilyn Monoe (l) and Clark Gable (r) on the set of The Misfits by Macfadden Publications / Wikimedia Commons Public Domain
