Japan Porn ‘Idol’ to Make Debut as Korean Pop Singer

CYBERSPACE—K-Pop is perhaps the most popular musical genre in Korea, inspiring legions of devoted fans and creating an entire subculture in that country, with its own fashions, celebrities and of course, music. But now, one of Japan’s top porn performers is ready to take her shot at K-Pop stardom. In fact, not only is porn star—or as it’s called in Japan, AV star—Yua Mukami scheduled to make her debut as a K-Pop “idol” singer in March, she is bringing two of her fellow performers along with her, giving the normally chaste and tightly image-controlled K-Pop industry its first all-porn girl group. Called Honey Popcorn, the trio will also feature AV performers Miko and Sakura. According to the promotional image posted on Mukami’s Instagram (above), the group’s first performance will take place at the 1,100-seat YEs24 Hall in Seoul, Korea, on March 18. But this is not the 24-year-old Mukami’s first go-round in the pop world. Between the ages of 14 and 20, she sang in the Japanese “J-Pop” girl group SKE48 before leaving the group to do porn—a career choice that seems less unusual when you consider the fact that K-Pop and J-Pop “idol singers” are often thought to reach their shelf life around age 20, and are summarily fired from their groups when they are deemed too elderly. Mukami’s return to the world of idol singing is rater daring considering her age, but her career in porn forms a significant piece of her promotional campaign. But then again, her debut in an “AV” video in 2015, in the  film Princess Peach, exploited her career in J-Pop for promotional purposes, with one article at the time enthusing that the entire Japanese adult industry became “turbulent” when it was learned that the former pop idol would appear in an explicit sex video. She became quickly known as a “national idol” in the AV industry as well as in J-Pop. Mukami continued her recording career even as her porn career thrived, releasing a single, “Ribbon,” in November of 2016.
