Women Getting Vibrator Prescriptions From Their Physicians

LOS ANGELES—Various mainstream media outlets are reporting this week that there is a growing trend among physicians to prescribe pleasure products to menopausal and post-menopausal women. In an article that was originally posted by The Huffington Post, Dr. Barb DePree—a gynecologist who’s been recognized for her “exceptional contributions” to menopause care—explained why she has been prescribing vibrators to her patients to benefit their health. “When your vision started to fail, you didn’t give up reading,” DePree said in the article. “You went out and bought yourself  pair of readers. Same thing is true about ex.” Regular use of a vibrator can help strengthen the pelvic floor, which in turn can help prevent vaginal dryness and atrophy. Those conditions can make sex painful for some women, which might mean they shy away from intercourse of masturbation, which creates a cycle of perpetuating the discomfort and pain. Deeper said she keeps a vibrator handy in her office to show women and let them hold and feel the device, as well as prescribes everything from vibrators meant for penetration to ride-on versions, such as the MotorBunny. Back in 2010, AVN reported on luxury pleasure product manufacturer LELO working with Dr.  Andrew Scheinfeld to offer LELO products to patients who wanted to improve their sexual well-being. “I encourage all gynecologists to consider bringing these beneficial products out of the closet to a place where more women can find comfortable access with needed support and reassurance,” Dr. Scheinfeld said.  Read the entire HuffPo article here.   Pictured: Dr. Andrew Scheinfeld in 2010
