Continental Charmer: Interview With Jay Smooth

A native of Poland, he has been in the biz for three years now. “It’s been a very interesting experience. I was very lucky during this time to be able to travel a lot and work in very interesting destinations around the world—mostly for glamcore companies, because that’s where I was pretty much thrown in from the very beginning,” he says. Given his looks, it’s not surprising he works for the likes of Babe.com, Fantasy Massage and Penthouse. A mainstream model, Smooth got into the business with Penthouse Pet Layla Sin. But it turns out he had another near brush with porn earlier. “I was on the Metro train, the Red Line train—and I had my headphones on, and a girl just approached me. ... Long story short, she wanted to go out with me and she happened to be a porn star. She’s no longer active in the industry. But she wanted to introduce me to one agent in the industry and this meeting didn’t go well. ... I basically didn’t open that door then.” With Layla Sin he started on “those college videos and those amateur shoots. ... We performed with each other, and then we performed separately. My beginnings were very rough because I was thrown into very deep water; there were interesting things happening. So, yeah, it took me a while to kind of get a grasp of what’s going on and now I’m a completely different person.” The biggest change in Smooth’s life has been in his confidence level. “I know what to expect, I know exactly what they wanna shoot; I also shoot custom videos so I know what the customer wanna see. A lot of details, a lot of technicalities that I’ve learned over time from getting experience, getting good advice from the seasoned and older performers. I’m very good friends with John Strong, for example. On a personal level, he’s been in this business for a very, very long time. ... I’m a very business-oriented person. I just want to do my job to my best ability, respect my co-workers.” Smooth says he’s worked for most companies, “but I would like to work for some directors I have never worked for ... to just keep building up the reputation and trying to do the best work to my ability.” He’s even been known to offer to do a scene for free if it’s someone he really wants to work with. The well-groomed stud also gotten into the world of custom videos. “There are fans that are very serious about this,” he described. “They send me these scripts; they prepare very detailed descriptions of everything and to an extent that is unbelievably detailed. And also they pick the performers, and go from there. So I’m taking it very seriously. Asked about performers he enjoys working with, Smooth said, “I’ve done so many scenes with Layla, but I’ve also had good scenes with Skin Diamond, with Jade Nile—Aidra Fox is one of my favorites to perform with. Heather Vahn—yeah, there are quite a lot of good experiences. I definitely like to work with people who are dedicated to this job, who treat this work as something more than just a job. They are willing to give the best of themselves.” When he works with someone new, he always asks, “Are you here purely to make money or you really just like what you do? Because it shows.” Smooth said candidly that he doesn’t always enjoy “those kind of scenes where you break in the girl into the industry” because sometimes the performers are ill-suited for the job. “Sometimes they shouldn’t be in this industry. They shouldn’t even go that path. ... Even before the scene is released, that girl is already done. Which is not a good thing. ...
