'Taboo The Mothers Edition': When Is a Comp More Than a Comp?

LOS ANGELES—Standard Digital, the production company founded by much-awarded director Kirdy Stevens and his wife Helene Terrie and now run by their son Steve, is about to release Taboo The Mothers Edition, a movie that may go a long way toward redefining what the word "compilation" means. "Understand, we never wanted to comp them," explained former Standard salesman Jon Islas. "There's a lot of dialog between the sex, so the Taboo movies aren't really made to be comped. Also, because these are films, they don't have split tracks, so if you were ever to cut out the scenes, the music wouldn't match, so in its entirety, Taboo and all films made in that era weren't really made for comps, and we never wanted to do it; we thought it would be a disservice." But as great as Stevens' early Taboo movies, I through V, were, Steve Stevens realized that there was something that could be done with them that would please classic adult fans and still do justice to the original productions. "What Steve's concept was, he decided to go through the entirety of the Taboo series from the mothers' perspective," Islas said. "So the very first scene starts off with one of the very first scenes with the mother, Kay Parker, in Taboo I, and it follows her journey through Taboo I, Taboo II, Taboo III, and it picks up on the other mothers, Honey Wilder and Colleen Brennan, in Taboo II and III and it follows them all the way through Taboo V, which I guess is the last mother one; Taboo VI was about brother-sister incest. So instead of it being a comp, it's really just Taboo I through V from the mother's perspective, so it's a full movie; it has all of the timeline; it follows the events in the movies in order, so it's really not a comp; it's a full story and it's kind of amazing. "There are even entire companies whose whole shtick is to cash in on the mommy or step-mom thing," he added. "Taboo started it, and is still today a best seller in those genres." Created in the golden age of porn and captured in 35mm, the Taboo films paved the way for an entire genre of incest films today, not to mention the popularity of the MILF genre. Still somewhat shocking even by today's standards (though perhaps an inspiration for the mainstream American Pie movies), the Taboo series takes viewers into an incestuous world of mothers seducing their sons, brothers and sisters sneaking around together, and fathers who give in to their daughter’s endless lust that is both thematic and erotic. "Kirdy always wanted to make a 'Best of Taboo' release that was not only the acts themselves but also a story thread encompassing his entire Taboo series, and that is what I think we accomplished here," said Steve Stevens. "This time, it is focused on the mother’s relationships." The entire Standard Digital line is now being distributed by Exile Entertainment, with the latest addition, Taboo The Mothers Edition, due to hit stores in early October.
