Op-Ed: Kate England on ‘Hot Girls Wanted’

Controversial new documentary Hot Girls Wanted, concerning the recruitment of young women into the so-called "pro-am porn" world, has struck a nerve among members of the adult industry community. AVN wanted to know what those at the very center of the HGW debate thought about it—namely, adult's current crop of "fresh" starlets. So for the July issue of AVN we polled a number of up-and-comers, all no older than 21 and in the industry no longer than about a year, for their reactions to the movie and their own thoughts about what new performers need to do well in the industry. Some of them had quite a lot to say. One of these was Kate England, whose comments are below. (England is pictured here in Better Than Mom, a title from Kelly Madison Media.) The film is an accurate description of how girls start in the porn industry in Florida. It is not, however, an accurate description of how all the girls begin in the industry. The porn industry in Florida is a very different scene than the porn industry in Los Angeles, for example. I started porn in Miami, Florida, just like the girls filmed in Hot Girls Wanted. I do agree that an ad on Craigslist or some other website is usually how a girl finds an agent and is introduced into the industry. I found my agent through her scout on a cam girl site that I was currently working at. These ads for young girls are everywhere on the internet and there are a lot of scams that you have to be careful and avoid. The offer I received, however, was a very in-depth description of what I would be doing and gave references of other porn stars that also got into the industry through them. Most of the girls that start are 18-21 years old and yes, they are usually running away from a small town, family, or just see quick, easy money. I had previously been a dancer at a few gentlemen’s clubs and had danced my way through college. I was currently employed in an Urgent Care Clinic and was struggling financially to pay for all my student loans and other bills. All I could see was the dollar signs and all I had to do was have sex! I was sold immediately at the thought of fast money, and also traveling and living in Miami was just icing on the cake. I believe this is the case with all the girls that begin their career in Florida. I mean, c’mon, we are all going to have sex anyway, right? Why not get paid to do it? Not to mention everyone is tested, so it’s probably safer than having sex with a random stranger for free! Those were my thoughts when I went to Miami to start my career. My first shoot was In the VIP with Reality Kings. I would be going with a few other girls from my model house and I was very nervous. A couple other girls had already done the shoot in the past and assured me that I would have a blast! They made me feel a little better but I was still trying to catch my breath when we pulled up to the club where the shoot would be. What made me feel most comfortable is the male talent we would be shooting with were very nice and made me feel a lot better. My first shoot was so much fun and I definitely couldn’t wait for the next shoot! Every shoot I ever went to, the male talent and production crew made me feel like a queen. Always introduced themselves and complimented me, which was definitely a huge confidence booster and very important when you are a new girl and haven’t been on a porn set very many times. You need all the confidence boosting you can get in the beginning! This is my more personal opinion of the film. I am going to say, I cried almost the whole film. I cried because that was me in the beginning. I had been to those same places, met the same people, and shot for the same companies. I was told the same things and had my mind filled with all the same thoughts. Then I traveled to Los Angeles and signed with 101 Modeling, which is still my agency at present, and realized how much different the industry was. I have felt much more comfortable and encouraged shooting porn in Los Angeles with a licensed agency and bigger productions. To sum it up, this film is a very good description of how the porn industry works in Florida, but not how the entire porn industry actually is.
