Dana Dane Returns to Adult With 'Seduction Diaries of a Femme'

LOS ANGELES—As pleased as we were to attend the filming of Dana Dane's Seduction Diaries of a Femme, we have to say, the best news of the day wasn't the movie itself, but the return, after a four-year absence, of its director, Dana Dane. She's the award-winning creator of the Erocktavision series, almost all of whose volumes scored AAAA reviews from AVN. And the icing on that cake is that not only has Adam & Eve recognized Dane's creative talent, but they'll be making available all of Dane's Erocktavision titles as well. "The Seduction Diaries of a Femme is a new series," Dane explained. "It's women's fantasies of being with a more masculine-embodied woman. Not necessarily hardcore butch—I consider myself a tomboyish kind of girl. I don't think it's about the hair—short hair, long hair, stuff like that—it's about the embodiment. So we definitely wanted to find more masculine women, more feminine women and pair them together, but we also wanted it to be more like, 'Is that a boy? Could that be?' So I did cast some girls that have short hair, and of course Lily Cade is a phenomenal performer and she's a lesbian so that's awesome, and I was looking for specific things like that, but I do want to stay true to the femininity and beauty of women in all ways." The movie is a significant departure from Dane's earlier material. For one thing, she's upped the ante from her previous work by recreating sexual situations over four decades, all the while mindful of criticism she's received from fans of her earlier movies. "I don't want just a bunch of moaning," she said. "I'm trying to listen to people and hear what they want. I know from my Erocktavision movies, one of the only critiques that I felt people were 50/50 on was the moaning and the music, so I started to put the moaning and the music in together. That's why I got the sound guy for this shoot. We're capturing the moaning, and I can make it go in and out and bring it in and out with the music, and I think the audience I have will be very happy. "I have original music that is being made for each era, so the music will fit," she continued. "That's why were able to do some of the sex MOS [a humorous faux-German Hollywood term from the '20s, 'Mit Out Sound'] and get some of the moaning siphoned in there. For the '50s, '60s, '70s and '80s, we really went all out with the wardrobe. We even got vintage Porsches, from like 1957. I specifically brought in incredible makeup and wardrobe and stylists and hair people that just could really catch those eras, and we worked really hard in making it really true to the '50s, '60s, '70s and '80s, and I think that will show in the movie. We actually got vintage sex toys, vibrators, to the times. They're a little difficult to use, and I don't want the girls to hurt themselves, but we had them in as props, and of course, we used the Adam & Eve line of toys." The key word, then, is "artistry," and on that score, Dane really knows her stuff. For example, today's first scene is a solo featuring Raven Rockette, dressed in colorful flowing minidress and even a jeweled headband. She's reclining on a '70s era couch that's decked out in faux fur, looking as if she's just finished a doobie. But as the scene is about to commence, Dane is insistent that at least one of the three cameras capturing the action—usually the one on the rails—first see Raven through a fog—even if the fogging machine she's brought with her seems to trip the circuit breakers occasionally. As the scene commences, Raven is reclining on the couch, writing in her journal—but she spots an old-style vibrator in a basket on the floor, picks it up and examines it, but decides just to use her hands to rub her chest and pussy through her sequined undergarments. Raven takes a break to look at her naked body in the full-length mirror, but soon she's back on the couch, playing with herself through the sequins, and finally fully nude, eventually bringing herself off with her fingers rubbing her clit and delving into her pussy. I think they do things by committee, but Wit kept in touch with me, followed me, and he saw on Facebook that I had my back surgery, and waited to approach me until I was healed, which was awesome. So Wit got me in touch with Rachel [Vigneaux], and we met and she really understood what I was trying to do. They said to me, 'We're ready for you and we would like to really bring you in and do our lesbian content, and also conscious erotica.' "I've always wanted to make conscious erotica—erotica that's artistic to the point of being cinematic; that's been my forte—and true girl/girl lesbian content, staying true to women and to feminine sensitivity, staying true to feminism, and they feel that too, so it's a good fit," she added. "As an indy filmmaker, I've waited a long time for a company to come along that I can join forces with, that truly gets my vibe, and what I want to do in making erotic movies and adult content. What we would like to do is get women to write in real women's fantasies, and pick up some of them and make movies about those. But you're never short of fantasies, for sure!" Soon it was time for the next scene, sex in a bar with Raven and Lily Cade, and Dane took the actors aside and explained just what she wanted from them: Raven as a patron and Lily as the bartender looking to seduce the attractive brunette.
