Interview: 2015 Best Actor Steven St. Croix

This article originally ran in the March 2015 issue of AVN. To see the issue, which features coverage of AVN's January shows, click here. A 21-year veteran of the adult industry, Steven St. Croix has always been a good actor—and one with the drive to become a better one, as evidenced by the fact that when he left XXX for a time in the late ’90s, he took scene study classes with a good mainstream coach, and even spent some time with the Groundlings comedy troupe learning to do improv, all of which he brought back to the industry at the beginning of the century. Commenting on the movie which garnered him a trophy this year, Vivid’s Wetwork, St. Croix said, “We've had a lot of movies where assassins are the lead characters, so when I read the script, when [director] Eli Cross gave it to me, there was a depth to it that I hadn't seen before, and I saw there was room for a good character arc, a good story arc, and I was excited," St. Croix stated. "When I approached the character, I was very cognizant of the fact that—I'm a very physical person; my face shows a lot of reactions, and I tend to be over the top, so what I decided to do was to go in a different direction," he continued. "I felt like this character needed to have a stillness to him which I think made his presence in what he said and what he was going through much more compelling, so I tried to ignore whatever instincts I had and I really tried to contain myself within this metaphorical box that the character has put himself in because of what he does." St. Croix gave a shout out to his fellow nominees, saying "they're great to watch," and added on a personal note, "I feel blessed to be able to still work and still do roles that affect a reaction from critics and fans."
