Refinery29 Offers Beauty Tips from Four Leading Porn Stars

LOS ANGELES—Fashion site Refinery29 is refreshingly non-snooty when it comes to providing smart beauty tips to its readers, no matter where the tips come from. In a slide-show feature put together last month during AVN Week in Las Vegas, and published on the site this weekend, Refinery29 is offering its readers "Beauty Tips From Porn Stars" culled from four of the industry's most "flawless" stars—Joanna Angel, Kayla-Jane Danger, Bonnie Rotten and Skin Diamond. The piece was put together by Fawnia Soo Hoo, who explains in her opener, "Sometimes, it’s refreshing to mix things up a bit. Like forgoing Taylor Swift on replay for a little Sleigh Bells (Alexis Krauss, you sexy thing) or, better yet, giving your standard vanilla porn a breather in favor of some edgy alt adult fare. Because, well-placed arty tattoos, all the piercings, and a badass attitude just make life a little more interesting. Plus, there’s more to some of these alt ladies than performing in films. They’re out there writing, producing, and directing their work, and running their own companies—and looking flawless while they're at it." We could not agree more with that assessment, or with Hoo's somewhat gushing description of the chosen four: "We talked to four women dominating the industry right now: actress, writer, director, and producer Joanna Angel (basically the Angelina Jolie of alt-porn); actress, model, new-media mogul, and author Kayla-Jane Danger; actress, model, and director Bonnie Rotten; and model-turned-actress-and-singer Skin Diamond. These fearless stars graciously took time away from the AVN Awards (a.k.a. the Oscars of adult film) to dispense crucial advice on making makeup stay put, keeping skin flawless from head to toe, and masterfully disguising blemishes, weird tan lines, and love bites all over. Spoiler alert: They hold differing opinions when it comes to personal grooming. Gotta keep it interesting, right?" The slide show presents the tips according to subject, covering such essential topics as "Primer and setting spray are your staying-power secrets," "Keep a go-to mascara in your makeup kit," "Find a surefire way to cover up blemishes, tattoos, and more when necessary," and "If you shave, do it right." On that last point, one of the stars offers a suggestion that any woman (and many men) will likely find useful, even if they're not shooting naked in HD: “There’s this product out in adult stores called Coochy Cream. It’s a shaving cream with aloe in it, and it really helps the razor bumps.” Hoo helpfully adds that the product also is available online. Though there are only seven slides worth of advice from the adult performers, the tips cover a lot of flesh. The experience was valuable not just for those who will gain from the advice proffered, but also for the performers. “It’s rare that any media outlet asks someone like me for makeup tips,” said Kayla-Jane Danger. “This is awesome and lets people into our worlds off-set to see we’re more than just women who work in adult, but fashionistas too. I really enjoyed how the piece turned out and how they called me a ‘new-media mogul.’” Another refreshing aspect of the feature is the extent to which people commenting on it came to the defense of the stars used in the piece when the inevitable comments attacking them for their chosen profession were raised. In reaction to the misplaced hate, and by a wide margin, readers appreciated the advice, with some understanding of just how valuable it actually is. "Regardless of whether or not your profession aligns with theirs," commented Mariana L. two days ago, "These are great tips from women who have wear-tested makeup over many hours, lots of friction and under high camera scrutiny..." And, we repeat, looking flawless while doing it.
