Porn-Themed Musical 'A Pretty Filthy Evening' Heads to NYC

LOS ANGELES—A musical about the porn industry titled A Pretty Filthy Evening, which was developed by New York theater group The Civilians starting back in 2009 (with a cabaret version staged at Center Theatre Group's Kirk Douglas Theater in Culver City, California in 2011), is now headed to New York City, first for one night in cabaret form December 2 at 54 Below (254 W. 54 St.), and then for a staged Off-Broadway run Jan. 31 - March 1 at the Abrons Arts Center Henry Street Settlement (466 Grand Street). According to TheaterMania, the Dec. 2 cabaret at 54 Below will feature "new songs from the show by Michael Friedman (The Fortress of Solitude, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson). "Featured performers in the concert," the site adds, "are Bryce Pinkham (A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder), Grammy winner Lady Rizo, Steve Rosen (Peter and the Starcatcher), Alyse Alan Louis (The Rocky Horror Show), Marrick Smith (Fun Home), Shakina Nayfack (One Woman Show), Jeanine Serralles (The Jammer), and Emily Young (Cymbeline)." In addition to the show's tunes, the cabaret will include "uncensored excerpts from the interviews conducted with subjects ranging from living with porn stars and eating sushi with porn stars." According to a synopsis found here, "The Civilians' time in the Valley captured a singular time in our culture; this digital era that's radically transformed the business of sex. Pretty Filthy is ultimately a story about trying to make a life and a living in an ever-changing world—a task that's all the more complicated when your work is so intimately tied to customer 'satisfaction.'"
