How Will Adult Entertainers Fare in Hobbled Atlantic City?

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ—As Atlantic City goes through its latest painful downturn, this time denoted by the highly publicized closing of four casinos this year, as well as the anticipated closure of the Trump Taj Majal, characterized by The Patriot-News as "all but bankrupt and teetering," the paper took a look today at the state of strip clubs in the city, and the prospects for adult performers dependent upon visitors to the city. The article is headlined "Nude dancers in Atlantic City to lose their shirts as casinos close?" and opens with the proposition that as go the casinos in Atlantic City, "so goes the rest of the city." But as reporter John Luciew quickly found out, while the impact of the closures can be widely heard and felt by business and residents in the city, determining their impact on the strip clubs and dancers was not so easy. "It proved a difficult question to answer, as the managers behind the counters at several adult entertainment shops simply wouldn't talk," wrote Luciew. "They shook their heads, even as the neon signs blazing all around shouted about '25-cent peep shows' in which a mere quarter raises a screen on a live dancer as the viewer watches inside a small, private booth." Luciew also struck out with the performers. "A dancer quickly exiting a slow adult establishment also was mum on the health of her industry and the prospects of a long, hard winter," he reported. "This, after a total of four casinos having closed their doors already this year." Eventually, Luciew resorted to locals and visitors to get an idea of the state of stripping and its prospects for the near future. "With those inside the adult entertainment industry preferring privacy, we spoke to some tourists and residents outside Playground II, which also doubles as a convenience store of sorts." Everyone he spoke with had pretty much the same take: Business would be slow for strip clubs because fewer people would be coming to the city, but the clubs would stay open and the best dancers would continue to make a living. "It's down," said one local resident, "but you have people who come here just for that. The good dancers, they will make it." More to the point, the general consensus of the tough residents of Atlantic City is that the city, which has been here before, will rise again. "I see Atlantic City as the fiery phoenix coming back," said the optimistic local. "They are giving those casinos away. You're telling me that someone's not going to buy them and make a profit? Things are bad now, but it's going to definitely improve."
