Ed Wood's 'Lost' Porno to Be Released on DVD in November

LOS ANGELES—Notorious "bad movie director" and sometime pornographer Ed Wood’s last movie, The Young Marrieds, will be released on DVD November 18 by After Hours Cinema as part of a collection titled "Ed Wood's Dirty Movies," which also contains Wood's Nympho Cycler (1971) and Shot on Location (unknown). The Young Marrieds is one of the rarest ‘lost’ movies in cult filmdom—so rare it wasn’t even known for sure it existed until being discovered by "porn archaeologist" Dimitrios Otis in 2007. The Young Marrieds is acknowledged to be Ed Wood’s final film. This discovery follows Otis's involvement with the discovery of the lost porno chic relic, Canada's first hardcore porn film, Sexcula. To celebrate the release, New York's Anthology Film Archives will host the world premiere of the film as part of "The 10th Dimension: Edward D. Wood Jr." The retrospective will run from September 11-18, with The Young Marrieds screening on September 14, hosted by Rudolph Grey, author of the definitive biography on the filmmaker, Nightmare of Ecstasy: The Life and Art of Edward D. Wood Jr. In a statement released today about the upcoming release of the Wood porno, Anthology Film Archives notes, ”The Young Marrieds is both a step deeper into the adult film world Ed Wood helped pioneer, and at the same time a plea for tolerance of alternate sexual lifestyles and identities. This is the only Wood film that expresses his personal feelings on homosexuality." A synopsis by Indie distributor AlternativeCinema.com adds that the movie "hearkens back to Wood’s very first feature, the infamous Glen or Glenda (1953)," and added, "Sporting numerous prop items from Wood’s Necromania (1971) but trading its softcore-with-inserts format for full hardcore, The Young Marrieds will both shock and fascinate the millions of Wood fans around the world." Alternative Cinema also quotes the narrator of the film: "Let us be patient, tender, wise, and forgiving in this strange task of living. For if we fail each other, each will be gray driftwood lapsing into the abyss." Image: Poster, and Ed Wood with perrformer on the set of Nympho Cycler (1971).
