Disgraced Chinese Official Stashed Porn Under Buddha Statue

CHINA—For thousands of years Chinese society has been a bastion of corruption, and modern times are no exception. In fact, things have reportedly gotten so bad that the central government in Beijing has launched a nationwide anti-corruption campaign intended to root out offenders in and out of government, no matter where they are. As part of the crackdown, shanghaiist.com reports, "Three senior civil servants from Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region are the latest to see their careers crumble in the sweeping anti-corruption campaign launched by President Xi Jingping. Anti-corruption agents found that the officials were spending illicit funds on real estate and traveling on more than 80 occasions." But the news report also indicate that one of the officials felt compelled to hide the fact that he also liked to enjoy some adult entertainment from time to time, and that he picked what he probably thought would be a very safe place to store his "pornographic films." Under Buddha. But as told by Jennifer Hui for shanghaiist.com, the porn is just the tip of the problem iceberg for this official. After noting the allegation levied against fellow officials, she continues, "Wu Zhizhong, the former vice secretary-general of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, had likewise dabbled in his fair share of real estate purchases. It's reported that Wu owned 33 properties in China and one in Canada. According to China News, adding all of his door keys together 'could fill up an entire bag'. "In Wu’s storage rooms in Beijing and Hohhot," she adds, "there were reportedly 2,000 bundles of cash notes, bars of gold and silver, expensive paintings and watches. "To top it off," she concludes, "Wu had transformed a room into a place of Buddhist worship, where he had his daily sutra study. It was in the same room that he was found to have stored 100 pornographic films beneath a Buddha shrine, according to reports." The article even comes with a photo of what we presume is the actual Buddha used by Wu, whose position and alleged wealth apparently did nothing to mitigate his profound (and understandable) paranoia about watching adult entertainment and the public shaming that would inevitably be visited upon him if anyone dared look under the Buddha!
