10 Killed in Grenade Attack at Pakistan 'Porn Theater'

PESHAWAR, Pakistan—A bombing Monday at a movie theater known for showing porn films has left 10 people dead, reports The Telegraph. The killings at the Shama cinema in Peshawar come a little more than a week after two explosions at the Picture House Cinema in the same city claimed five lives and dozens injured. Hand grenades were used in both attacks, though no group has yet claimed responsibility for either attack, said police. According to The Telegraph, Peshawar, which is close to the border with Afghanistan, "is in the frontline of the Pakistan’s Islamist insurgency and its movie houses—known for showing bawdy movies to marijuana smoking audiences—are frequent targets." In fact, the attacks have been escalating over the past few years, leading to the closure of several cinemas. "CD shops have also been targeted as well as barbers, who have been warned not shave beards or cut hair too short," reported the paper. "The Shama showed popular Bollywood hits, movies made in Pakistan’s movie capital of Lahore as well as pornographic films made all around the world and dubbed badly into the local Pashtu language." The film being played during this latest attack was titled Yamara ("Friendship"). A member of the audience commented, "I was watching the film when three back-to-back blasts occurred. After that everyone was crying. Many of the injured were hurt in the stampede as people were running for safety." The militants carrying out these attacks have been largely successful in their goal of destroying any sense of security among the population. "Last month," added The Telegraph, "hardliners succeeded in shutting down the planned launch of Malala Yousafzai’s memoir, in which she describes being shot by the Taliban for her campaign to get more girls into school." In a bid to reduce the violence, the government in Islamabad has opened peace talks with the Taliban, but he paper reports that few observers expect the attacks to end anytime soon.
