Dana Vespoli Blurs Gender Lines With 'Girl/Boy'

VAN NUYS, Calif.—Director/performer Dana Vespoli's latest psycho-sexual opus for Evil Angel, Girl/Boy, takes an experimental look at the blurring of traditional gender identity traits. "Girl/Boy came about because of Jiz Lee," Vespoli said. "Jiz is neither a 'she' nor a 'he.' Jiz is Jiz, and refuses to be identified by gender pronouns, or be recognized as female or male. It forces people to think when they address Jiz, and this raised a question for me: How do we self identify? Do we leave it up to society, or do we demand society recognize us on our own terms? I have an enormous amount of admiration for Jiz, who chooses the latter." Vespoli explained that this unique quality of Lee's inspired the main theme of trangression in Girl/Boy. "After speaking at length with Jiz I wanted to make a movie that explores gender transgression," Vespoli said. "In my college years I'd had boyfriends who would cross-dress for me, and I would do the same for them. I revisit this in the movie with Danny Wylde and Veruca James. There is an amazing d.p. with Ramon Nomar, Valentina Nappi and me as the other 'male' character." She continued, "This movie is incredibly special to me, and very personal. It made me feel both nostalgic for my college years, and excited about the future, as I see performers like Jiz and Danny Wylde as the future of this industry: thoughtful, intelligent, sexy risk-takers."
