2011 Urban X Award Winners Announced

LOS ANGELES—The fourth annual Urban X Awards ceremony was held Saturday evening at The Vault nightclub in downtown L.A., a more intimate but also more upscale venue than the 740 Club, where it had been set to take place until Friday, when organizers announced an 11th-hour location change. Despite an early start time for such an event—with red carpet kicking off at 4 p.m.—many of the biggest stars from the ethnic sector of adult showed up dressed to the nines and ready to celebrate in gala fashion. Lisa Ann, who would be inducted into the Urban X Hall of Fame later in the evening, interviewed all the luminaries as they arrived on the red carpet to be photographed by the waiting bank of porn paparazzi. Once inside, they staked out places to sit in the theater-in-the-round layout of chairs, tables and booths surrounding a small platform stage. Joslyn James was spotted making her entrance, by some wild coincidence, as the Ludacris song "My Chick Bad" was playing and reached the lyric "Coming out swinging like Tiger Woods' wife." A sort of informal dance party proceeded to erupt all around the club, lasting until the emcee for the evening, James Bartholet, called upon everybody to take their seats. But before the ceremony actually began, a live band by the name of Brain Dead played a set of three death metal tunes—much to the apparent bewilderment of many attendees—after which comedian Clayton Thomas took the stage and got the crowd suitably warmed up for the impending main event. Thomas elicited a particularly strong howl when he implored anyone there who knew Brian Pumper (who was not present) to "please tell that nigga to stop rappin'!" Finally at around 7:45, hosts Nyomi Banxxx and Alexander DeVoe came up to get the awards presentations underway. Aside from occasional difficulties coordinating the graphics displayed on several screens and the scripted patter read off by presenters announcing nominees and winners, the ceremony kept moving briskly and relatively on schedule, managing to wrap up by just after 9 p.m., when the venue needed to clear the premises for another event.
