Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality Honors Al Bloom

CHINO, Calif.—Al Bloom, director of marketing for California Exotic Novelties, is being honored with the degree of Honoris Causa Doctor of Arts from The Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality. A veteran in the adult and novelty industries since 1970, Bloom's degree is a result of his many contributions to the field of erotolgy and sexology. "Al has been a member of the CalExotics team since 2003, but beyond that he has been a friend and associate of mine for many, many years. Al is a master of his field, absolutely knowledgeable in all areas of sexuality, and a true pioneer in the adult arena. I can't think of someone more deserving of this honor," saidSusan Colvin, president and CEO of California Exotic Novelties. Bloom graduated fromKentStateUniversityin 1970 with a BBA in marketing. Throughout the ’70s, his career included being the general manager of the adult distribution companies Capitol News Agency and Sovereign News Company (now Transworld News Inc.). From 1979 to 1993 he was the president and co-owner of Caballero Home Video, once the largest film producer in the industry. He also was the vice president and co-owner of Vidco Entertainment, an adult film producer from 1987 to 1993. From 1993 to 1998 he was the director of marketing at Doc Johnson Enterprises and from 1998 to 2003 he was a partner in M&M Sales, a now defunct major novelty distribution company. Bloom also served on the board of directors for the Adult Film Association and the Adult Video Association and was instrumental in creating the Free Speech Coalition in 1992. "Al is an icon. Everyone in the industry knows Al Bloom. I congratulate him on his honorary doctorate degree and all he has accomplished during his illustrious career," said Jackie White, vice president of sales for California Exotic Novelties. The Honoris Causa Doctor of Arts degree gives Bloom an adjunct faculty appointment, meaning he has the ability to instruct erotology at the IASHS or other institutes of higher learning. Bloom was nominated to receive the degree by a board of his peers. President of the IASHS Robert Theodore McIlvenna, said, "Al is one of the early heroes of the sexual revolution. His creativity and imagination drove the development of many products to help enhance the public's sexuality. Al is a fine gentleman who is well deserved of this achievement." The IASHS offers five graduate degree programs for people who want training in sexology. The programs are designed specifically for those who intend to make the field of sexology and erotology a major focus of their professional careers. The Institute is located inSan Francisco, and is approved and registered by the State ofCalifornia Bureaufor Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education. "I'm overwhelmed by this honor," said Bloom. "I never expected anything like this and am grateful to the IASHS for such a prestigious acclamation."
