Stormy Daniels ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ Debacle: What Happened?

British tabloids, and even the United Kingdom’s non-tabloid news outlets, went into a frenzy on Friday after Stormy Daniels attempted to appear on another TV show there—despite having suddenly backed out of her planned appearance on the Celebrity Big Brother reality show just two hours before a live broadcast of the CBB season premiere on which Daniels had been billed as the star attraction. Read AVN.com’s coverage of the bizarre debacle as it happened on Thursday, at this link. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Daniels' lawyer Michael Avenatti blamed the show’s producers for the “row” that led to Daniels’ sudden departure. "They insisted she conduct herself in a certain way—they attempted to control her and produce a certain result, which she did not feel comfortable with,” Avenatti told the Reporter. Daniels had been in negotiations to appear on the show since May. As recently as August 13, she denied on her Twitter account, as AVN.com reported, that she would appear on the show. But on Wednesday night, she took the long flight from Los Angeles to London, England, anyway. On arriving, she reportedly taped her introductory video for the show, and then made the decision to back out of the appearance after all. According to a report by Britain’s Sun tabloid newspaper, Daniels pulled out over a pay dispute in which she demanded an additional £100,000 (US$127,000) over and above a reportedly agreed record-setting £750,000 (more than $950,000) fee. But a source close to the negotiations told AVN.com that the tabloid reports were not correct. In fact, according to the source, Daniels had already nixed the near-million-dollar offer for a three-and-a-half week stint in the “Big Brother House,” and had agreed to a fee of £200,000 ($254,000) for only one week. There was no further dispute over her payment, the source said. Avenatti also said in his statement to The Hollywood Reporter that there was no pay dispute. Celebrity Big Brother airs on Britain’s Channel 5 network, and Channel 5 after Thursday’s Daniels pullout provided Daniels with an airline ticket back to the United States for a flight that would depart at 8:30 a.m. British Summer Time on Friday (3:30 a.m. U.S. Eastern Daylight Time). But instead of taking the flight, Daniels went to a competing network, ITV, where she was slated to give an interview to a popular morning talk show, Loose Women. Whether Daniels had been booked in advance for that interview remains unclear. According to a report by Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper, Daniels planned to tell the interviewers that she was forced to withdraw from CBB due to a child custody dispute related to her ongoing divorce proceedings.  That explanation, if accurate, would appear to conflict with the explanation given by Avenatti of a dispute over Daniels’ role and performance on the show. However, Daniels’ appearance on Loose Women was cancelled just minutes before she was slated to appear live on the program after Channel 5 lawyers contacted ITV and told them that Daniels remained under contract there—a contract that included an exclusivity clause barring her from appearing on competing British TV outlets, the source told AVN.com. And in other Stormy news, it looks like the now-world-famous star has bridged a gap that no other adult industry personality ever has before. Those with a subscription to The New York Times, or at least to its crossword section, might want to take a look at the puzzle for Monday, August 13—notably clue #63 down. The answer is "aka"; we'll let you guess what the actual clue is.
