AVN Opens Pre-Nomination Period for 2017 AVN Awards

CHATSWORTH, Calif.—AVN Media Network on Thursday announced it is now accepting pre-nominations for the 2017 AVN Awards. To pre-nom something in any category, adult industry professionals must request access to the restricted pre-nom website here in order to submit their movies, products, outlets and other entities for awards consideration. The pre-nom website will remain open until midnight on Sept. 30, 2016, which is also the eligibility deadline for 2017 awards consideration. The 2017 AVN Awards Show is scheduled for Saturday, January 21, at The Joint inside Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Riley Reid and Aspen Rae will co-host the 34th annual ceremony sponsored by Chaturbate and MyFreeCams. Last year for the first time content released exclusively on membership sites was eligible for AVN Awards consideration. Four scene categories were opened up to also recognize content released solely for membership sites: Best Boy/Girl Sex Scene, Best Girl/Girl Sex Scene, Best Oral Sex Scene and Best Anal Sex Scene. For the 2017 AVN Awards, these same four categories will again be open for pre-nominations of content produced for membership sites. AVN has added two new categories for 2017 to recognize the emerging Virtual Reality genre. The first new category will also be open to content exclusive to membership sites: Best Virtual Reality Sex Scene. Any scene using VR technology that was released on a membership site between October 1, 2015 and September 30, 2016 will be eligible for consideration. The second new category is Best Virtual Reality Innovation, which will honor the most significant technological advance in the production or presentation of VR entertainment. That category will be part of the Web & Technology section of the AVN Awards. See below for details on eligibility for the 2017 AVN Awards. Eligibility Period To be considered in any of the video categories a title or scene must have been made available commercially during the eligibility period, which runs from October 1, 2015, to September 30, 2016. If a scene in one of the categories open to membership site content is released as both a standalone web scene and as part of a movie released on DVD or VOD, the scene will by default be considered part of the movie. For consideration in all other categories, a movie must be released in its entirety by September 30, 2016. Any scene considered for a 2017 AVN Award will be void from consideration in all future years if included as part of any movie released after September 30, 2016. DVD/VOD Eligibility To be considered for a nomination, movies released via DVD/VOD must either fit AVN’s traditional distribution requirements of being stocked with five wholesale distributors and/or 100 retail outlets (on DVD), or be made available for VOD download and/or streaming as follows: • Must be available through a minimum of two (2) major for-pay VOD providers, defined as ones carrying movies from at least 100 active labels/studios. • Must have clearly marked post dates within the eligibility period across all qualifying VOD platforms carrying it. • Companies wishing to submit VOD-only titles for consideration must provide links showing that said titles meet the above requirements. Standalone Web Scene Eligibility To be considered for nomination in the one of the five eligible categories, scenes must be released on a site that has members who are paying a monthly fee to access the site’s content. As with producers of content that is distributed on DVD and VOD, membership sites must also maintain 2257 records. Just a reminder about some changes made last year to the video section regarding feature and non-feature movie categories: Directors and studios can nominate non-features in two categories. Best Gonzo Movie is for projects that employ a cinema verité style making the cameraperson a participant in the proceedings, which may or may not incorporate POV footage. Best Anthology Movie is for projects that include either vignettes or all-sex scenes or a combination of the two. There are also niche categories in which non-narrative movies can be nominated. Narrative movies can be nominated in the traditional arenas of drama, comedy and parody. Movies with storylines can also be nominated in niche categories when they fit the criteria.
