Mia Khalifa Profiled by Washington Post

LOS ANGELES—Former porn star Mia Khalifa is back in the national spotlight this week as the subject of a column in the Washington Post's DC Sports Bog. On the heels of the Republican National Committee adopting an amendment to their draft platform Monday that refers to porn as “a public health crisis," the Post today published an article titled, "A former porn star has become one of D.C.'s loudest sports fans on social media." Columnist Dan Steinberg writes that Khalifa has become a surprisingly influential D.C. sports commentator due to her enormous network of followers. "I know, this seems weird," Steinberg suggests. "But who else would get hundreds and hundreds of likes for a 'Heartbroken' tweet after the Caps’ Game 6 loss in Pittsburgh? Or, uh, for an image of Alex Ovechkin photoshopped into her bosom?" The 23-year-old Khalifa, who is of Lebanese descent, received worldwide attention when she reportedly received death threats from the Lebanese community after Pornhub.com announced she was the site's No. 1 most searched for porn star in late December of 2014. Today she is retired from porn but has amassed 1.09 million Twitter followers @miakhalifa and almost 280k followers on Instagram. “Since I gained a social media platform, I decided right away that I want to bring as much attention to Maryland and D.C. and the DMV area as I can,” Khalifa tells the Washington Post.  Now a resident of Texas, she performed in about 20 scenes during a three-month stretch, stopping more than a year ago.   Steinberg notes that evidence of Khalifa's influence is measured with instances such as when she retweets lesser known blog sites that cover D.C. sports. "When she retweeted an image from @BurgundyBlog in January, it became that Redskins site’s biggest-ever tweet," Steinberg reports. Khalifa tells the Post she understands some teams separate themselves from her due to her porn past, "which I totally understand and respect." "But I’m still gonna support them,” she says.
