Fans Of Google’s DeepDream Already Using It For Porn, Erotica

CYBERSPACE—It’s an established fact: The internet was made for porn, from finding images and clips of favorite porn stars to uploading amateur porn, from crowdfunding adult movies to using a myriad of apps to help store the porn pages you peruse most often. So it should come as no surprise that as soon as a hot new app hits the interwebs, people quickly find a way to relate it to sex and porn and the like. Take, for example, the latest craze: DeepDream. Released earlier this month, DeepDream is a tech experiment by Google engineers that is an image identification artificial neural network that locks onto a certain feature of an image and exaggerates it throughout the image. In other words, users upload an image and this software picks something—a building, a face, an animal—and amplifies what it picks over and over again on the original image. The results can be beautiful and terrifying at the same time. As Motherboard noted: "This basically generated a feedback loop, which exaggerated or read more meaning into simple features. For example, the researchers explained that: 'If a cloud looks a little bit like a bird, the network will make it look more like a bird. This in turn will make the network recognize the bird even more strongly on the next pass and so forth, until a highly detailed bird appears, seemingly out of nowhere.' " The interwebs quickly exploded with trippy images that looked as if they came straight out of the combined minds of Hunter S. Thompson, Salvador Dali, Lewis Carroll and Robert Crumb on a really good—or really bad—acid trip. Of course, it didn’t take long for people to start using DeepDream to manipulate pictures of their penises, vulva, boobs and more. Reddit has a good collection of erotic and pornographic photos going already, and Motherboard has already decided the results are “What Computers Dream Of When They Look At Porn.” We admit we are both intrigued and disturbed by the trend, but have yet to figure out any real practical uses of the program in porn. But that doesn’t stop us from wondering what an image of Ron Jeremy will look like once it’s run through DeepDream … Pictured: An image of a bare-breasted woman run through Google’s DeepDream program.
