President Obama To Face 5,000 Naked Protesters in Kenya

NAIROBI, Kenya—One of the nicest parts of being a journalist covering politics is relearning, again and again, that politics does indeed make for strange bedfellows. As everyone knows by now, religious conservatives aren't very happy with President Obama—and despite all evidence to the contrary, about 15 percent of them "know for sure" that he wasn't even born in the U.S., with most citing Kenya as his birthplace. Those religio-conservatives also blame him—and "five unelected lawyers"—for the recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions reaffirming the Affordable Care Act and striking down anti-same-sex marriage laws across the country, which they consider a big step toward fulfillment of the "homosexual agenda." So imagine their confusion upon learning that during Obama's next visit to his "native land" on July 22-23, where the president will attempt to persuade the country's leaders to repeal anti-gay laws, he will be met with a "peaceful demonstration against homosexuality," in which "thousands of men and women will seek to 'educate' Obama on the differences between men and women—by standing completely naked," according to the Israeli National News. The march will be sponsored by Kenya's Republican Liberty Party, and in a letter dated July 13, "Party Leader" Kidala Vincent announced to the Police Commandant of Nairobi that his group will "hold a peaceful procession in Nairobi on [the] 22nd and 23rd of July 2015 commencing from Freedom Corner at 10:00am. The procession shall be carried out by approximately 5,000 totally naked men and women to protest over the United States of America President Barrack [sic] Obama's open and aggressive support for Homosexuality. The party's main objective is for him to see and understand the different [sic] between a man and woman." Of course, Obama is married and has two children, so he's probably got that "different" covered already—but what a number of journalists have been wondering is where Vincent's going to get 5,000 Kenyans who will be willing to march naked through the streets of the country's capital? Indeed, the well-known gay-oriented publication The Advocate quoted Kenyan LGBT activist Denis Nzioka as having strong doubts that Vincent will be able to accomplish the task, noting that "only 25 showed up at their last homophobic rally." But Vincent's response to the doubters—and here's where the "strange bedfellows" part comes in, at least as far as the religio-conservatives are concerned—was that, "In fact our party has a network of prostitutes in Nairobi, Nakuru and other counties. This is where we shall get all these people whose number we expect to increase," he told the Kenyan newspaper The Star. The right-wing site GOPUSA.com reported Vincent's statement as straight news—but they've got to be itching just a little bit at the thought of championing Kenya's anti-gay movement whose main upcoming activity will be attempting to fill Nairobi's streets with 5,000 naked prostitutes!
