Looking for Some Adult Industry History? Try 'Eroticon' Feb. 18

LOS ANGELES—Once again, the adult industry should give props to Cinefamily, the folks that have taken over the Silent Movie Theater in Hollywood, for exploring the history of adult film and some of its high-profile members. For example, last summer, Cinefamily hosted two nights of classic erotica when they showed the Rinse Dream classics Café Flesh and Nightdreams, and had as featured guests the filmmakers Stephen Sayadian (the director aka Rinse Dream) and Jerry Stahl (scripter). Then, in mid-August, the theater hosted an evening with Larry Flynt. This time, the Cinefamily programmers have unearthed an early porn documentary, Eroticon, made in 1971 and directed by Barnard L. Sackett, who also serves as the film's narrator and interviewer. Sackett doesn't have a lot of credits, but one that stands out is his scripting of 1965's sexy Sweet Smell of Sex, directed by Robert Downey Sr. (yes, Iron Man's dad). Cinefamily describes its upcoming presentation thusly: "Direct from the estate sale of a notoriously shameless 42nd Street smut merchant comes: Eroticon. 'An exotic tapestry of emotions, sensations and ideas…one step beyond experience,' screamed the original 'EX-Rated' poster. This quasi-doc mondo romp doesn’t just give a peek inside the sex-plosion of the early 70′s, it bumps and grinds all over it with a bevy of hilarious interviews punctuating groovy grindhouse montages of ham-fisted hardcore. Meet the editor of Screw Magazine, get the wet-hot truth on the burgeoning porno industry, talk to an accredited sexpert, visit a naughty boutique and learn about the early days of personal ads that put Craigslist to shame. Sure, there’s orgies, awkward BDSM and the obligatory bumping of uglies, but the main attraction here is the soundtrack—engorged with original would-be hits like “Fuck Me Forever.” Bonus cameo by renowned children’s book illustrator Tomi Ungerer! Don your trenchcoat for this impossibly rare screening of what might be the world’s only surviving print?" Of course, that description barely does the film justice. That "editor of Screw magazine," of course, is Al Goldstein, and his publishing/filmmaking partner Jim Buckley is also along for the ride. Also, the "accredited sexpert" is psychologist Dr. Albert Ellis, who besides holding down a flourishing Manhattan therapy practice in the '60s, was also an occasional contributor to erstwhile AVN Online editor Paul Krassner's The Realist. In Ellis's Realist interview, he argued that when insulting people, the preferred term should be "Unfuck you," since fucking is generally a pleasurable experience. Also featured in Eroticon are adult actresses Dolly Sharp (her line "Do you mind if I smoke while you eat?" is one of the more memorable ones from Deep Throat), Ariana Blue and Laura Cannon, as well as the soon-to-be-world-famous Harry Reems. And as for "renowned children’s book illustrator Tomi Ungerer," a mini-review in The New York Times makes his role a bit clearer: "Cartoonist Tommi [sic] Ungerer is interviewed about his 'sex machine' drawings." Anyway, February 18 is lkely to be a night adult industry members and fans are likely to remember if they can make it to Cinefamily at the Silent Movie Theater, located at 611 N. Fairfax Ave., Los Angeles 90036. Tickets can be purchased here.
