UT Announces Schedule for Second Annual Sex Week

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.—In only its second year of existence, Sex Week at the University of Tennessee has survived the inevitable controversy over its existence, as well as cuts to the amount of money it is allowed to spend, and has just released the schedule of events for the upcoming week-long festivities, which run March 2-7. The schedule can be found here, in addition to complete information about Sex Week at UT.  According to an article posted yesterday on campusreform.org, "One event, 'Get Wet: Exploring the Connections Between Sexual Pleasure, Health, & Advocacy' will ask students 'When is an orgasm a political act? When is lube a tool of the revolution?' The event description promises that host Megan Andelloux will 'demonstrate how three components of sexuality—pleasure, health, and advocacy—flow into one another as we explore a variety of topics centered on reproductive justice and sexual freedom. "The event will also inform students 'which sexual health issues are involved in back-door lovin', why you should care about sex workers' rights, and how you can defend your own sexual freedom through self-love.'" it continued. Tristan Taormino will also participate in a couple of the sessions, including one on March 6 titled, Calling Dr. Love: Ask a (S)expert!. Other topics to be explored during the week include "Stay the Night: Hook Up Culture," "War, Sexuality and Aggression," and "Can't Touch This: Abstinence," to name a few. If there seems to be a focus on ethical sexual behavior, it is not by accident. As noted by the conservative group Campus Reform, junior Nicky Hackenbrack, a board member of Sexual Empowerment and Awareness at Tennessee (SEAT), wrote a piece for the college’s newspaper recently that defended Sex Week, arguing, “In order to combat rape culture, we have to stop the sexual repression, because less sexual oppression leads to less sexual violence.” In addition to traditional seminars addressing serious concerns, UT's Sex Week will also feature a concert March 6 by Jamar Rogers, an art show on March 7 titled "The World We Love In: Understanding Sexual Identity," as well as a poetry slam the same evening that will signal the end of Sex Week at UT for 2014.
