Good News! Almost Two-Thirds of Nevadans Like Legal Brothels!

LYONS COUNTY, NV—As the Los Angeles County ballot initiative that would require all porn sets to have a "health certificate" and to use condoms and other protective devices comes closer to a November vote, the likelihood that the major players in the adult video industry will relocate to Nevada just got a boost, thanks to the results of a recent survey by Public Policy Polling (PPP). PPP, which does polling for, among others, such liberal outlets as DailyKos.com, surveyed 500 Nevada voters between June 7 and 10, and fans of adult entertainment will be pleased to learn that across the board, 64 percent answered "Yes" to the question, "Do you think that brothels should be legal or illegal in Nevada?" That's even more Nevadans than voted for John McCain in the 2008 election (63 percent), though not quite as many as the Obama supporters (67 percent). When PPP delved even further into the numbers, it discovered that those who described themselves as "very liberal" or "somewhat liberal" were brothels' biggest defenders (72 percent and 71 percent respectively), but even among "very conservative" Republicans, 50 percent still supported a citizen's right to visit a Nevada brothel. However, as PPP notes, "In late March, we found that only 20 percent of Nevada GOP voters supported gay marriage, so that's an interesting take on family values there."  Possibly connected to the brothel result was the finding that Nevadans prefer Reno, which has at least six brothels nearby, to Vegas, which has just two, 58 percent to 53 percent. Other figures show that Nevadans favor Democratic candidates over Republican 43 percent to 39 percent, and that 54 percent would trust disgraced Republican ex-Sen. John Ensign, a veterinarian by training, with their pets' healthcare, while 29 percent wouldn't. Surprisingly, most of those polled don't seem to know much about casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, who's on track to donate $100 million to Republican candidates and causes this election cycle, with the "Not sure" response as to his favorability at 56 percent—but among those who do recognize the name, his unfavorable rating is 10 points higher than his favorable, 27 percent to 17. A few more seem to favor fellow casino owner Steve Wynn (30 percent) though nearly as many disfavor him (29 percent) and 42 percent are "not sure." Any finally, it's nice to know that 56 percent of Nevadans don't believe in flying saucers.
