'SNL' Spoofs AVN Awards

CHATSWORTH, Calif.—Someone at Saturday Night Live must be aware that the 29th annual AVN Awards Show is just two weeks away, because this weekend's Charles Barkley-hosted episode of the still-relevant-after-all-these-years NBC sketch show included a timely segment skewering the "Oscars of porn." Of course, whoever was responsible for the skit couldn't have been that familiar with their source material—it was presented as the 17th annual "Adult Video Awards" as broadcast on the Spike network (our shindig airs on Showtime, thank you very much)—but they did choose as their comedic target a very legitimate portion of the AVN Awards: the memorial reel. In the admittedly very amusing sketch, SNL regular Bobby Moynihan, donning the signature Jew-mane and mostache of Ron Jeremy, and newer cast member Abby Elliott, as fictional "Starlet of the Year Crystal Butt," take the podium to introduce a tribute to such fallen industry notables as "Ricky Stroker, Actor," "Tony Dingle, Pizza Guy" and "Dong Corleone, The Dongfather." This isn't the first time SNL has satirized the AVNs. In a 2007 sketch with then cast member Darrell Hammond playing Al Gore, a genuine AVN trophy was featured as one of Gore's myriad awards. (The category: Best Group Sex Scene, for his work with four others in "the adult version of An Inconvenient Truth.")  See SNL's latest jab at porn's biggest night here. (It can be found just after the 48-minute mark.) And for tickets to actual AVN Awards, taking place January 21 at the The Joint at the Hard Rock Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, visit AVNAwards.com.
