Europe’s biggest gay porn studio, Eurocreme, has dipped its toe into the world of commercial film with March seeing the release of their short film, VGL-Hung! The twenty minute movie was made as a spin-off from the R18 release, Hung! from their BulldogXXX studio in 2007. Since, it has been touring the international film festival circuit, screening to packed audiences at events including London, Milan and New York Lesbian & Gay Film Festivals.
The project has now been picked up by Peccadillo Pictures, a UK based gay film distributor, for release on their Boys On Film DVD which is a compilation of titillating short films from gay film-makers; this first in the series will be sold through HMV, on-line and in specialist high-street stores.
VGL-Hung! was the made by Max Barber, aka, Maxwell.B who has been producing the R18 content for the BulldogXXX studio since it was set up in 2005. Essentially it’s a story about on-line dating – or shagging more like! A twisted, Cinderella style fantasy about a rather average guy who discovers a magic website that can give him the hunky body he desires in order to pull as many men as he can – which is where the stable of BulldogXXX porn stars come in. But there is a moral to the story with a subtext about the body and sex obsessed society we live in and the perils of convenience sex found via the internet.
The film tie-in is essentially to raise the profile of the models and the studio brands, but with its success and the film having distribution deals in Europe and in the United States, there is opportunity for a steady trickle of revenue coming back, especially from cable and pay-per-view companies. “Short films by nature don’t usually make money” commented writer-director Max “but with this model of production it is possible, given that we already have the locations, the cast and the production infrastructure set up for the R18 version. All we needed to do was be imaginative and write the script around what we had and employ some professional actors in the supporting roles to give the film and story some credibility.
The concept of profitable movie spin-offs seems to be causing attention as the storming new gay muscle studio, www.alphamalemedia.com has asked Max to do a movie-tie in with their next R18 production. Studio head, Trojan Rock, aka, Gavin Hay, who is an ex TV executive, commented: “As the economy wobbles we have to look at alternative ways of raising our profile outside of costly advertising and there is always the novelty value with porn spilling over into the mainstream if done right. Max is a film-maker at heart – his porn films are cracking too – and the standards he’s set with VGL-Hung! are very impressive. It sees like a wise, entrepreneurial approach to continue this merging of genres.”
Max & Trojan are planning the next R18 in the Out On series which will be shot in London and Rio and will tie with a short film all about gangsters getting mixed up in the porn industry – but with a very dramatic gay twist as you can expect!
